Obituary for Robert David Halpert

On Monday, June 10, 2019, Robert (Bob) Halpert, beloved father of eight and grandfather of ten, passed away at age 73.

Bob was born on July 26, 1945 in St. John’s, Newfoundland to Doris May Barrett and Charles Hyman Halpert. He grew up in Windsor, Ontario and earned his medical degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

He completed his medical training at McMaster University, Walter Reed Hospital, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He practiced radiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch, served as Professor of Medicine at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, and practiced radiology at Henry Ford Hospital.

He authored two gastrointestinal radiology textbooks, which were widely adopted in medical schools curriculums and translated into multiple languages. Teaching medical students and residents was the most gratifying part of his work, and over the course of his career he educated hundreds of doctors-in-training. During his early work as a family doctor, he delivered nearly 400 babies, including one of his own children.

Bob was also an accomplished writer. He was the author of two novels: a work of historical fiction and a mystery novel. He composed poetry and essays about his boyhood memories, his early training as a physician, and the rugged beauty of Newfoundland’s coasts. He often shared his writing and wisdom about life with his children and always warmly encouraged their own creative projects and career pursuits.

He was a gentle and devoted grandfather who took great pleasure in participating in the lives of his grandchildren. He attended their concerts and events, mailed them drawings and letters, and was always available to provide a reassuring consultation on every scrape or sprain. His ten grandchildren loved spending time with their “Dandan.”

He was a dedicated member of a men’s Bible study group for decades, and he welcomed opportunities to read scripture and discuss his Christian faith. He identified strongly with his Newfoundland roots and would fondly remember the rocky beaches and brightly painted houses of Carbonear where he spent summers on the shore, visiting his grandmother.

Bob is preceded in death by his mother, Doris May Barrett, and his father, Charles Hyman Halpert. He is beloved by his former wife, Sylvia Halpert; his children, Heather Anne Halpert, Stephenie McWalters, Jane Van Slembrouck, Emily Nightingale, Margaret Long, Robert Halpert, James Halpert, and Alex Brown; and his grandchildren, Aureliano, Cody, Beatrix, John, Mia, William, Charles, Quentin, Hector, and Barrett; and his siblings, Don Halpert, Wayne Halpert, Vicki Klein, and Sherri Carlesso.
