Obituary for John Lewis Walker

John Lewis Walker of Clarkston; age 70, went to Eternal rest with his Heavenly Lord on July 8, 2019. John, who was known to many as "Coach Walker" and to his grandchildren and other friends as "Johnpa," was born in Warsaw, Indiana on May 23, 1949 to Celine and James Walker.

He was the loving husband to his high school sweetheart and wife, Gina (Denver) Walker for 48 years, married on August 7, 1970. A devoted father to Jennifer (Eddie) Legg, Janine (Sal) Gaglio, Jim (Kelly) Walker, Mary (John) Nedwick, Adrienne (Eric) Dale, and David (Danielle) Walker and Colleen Ann, who preceded him in death in 1980. Grandfather to his “Little pieces of Heaven”; Adam, Alex, Josh, Celine, and Abby Legg; Clare, Andrew, Michael, and Gina Gaglio; Colleen, Luke, Erica, Dominic, Carrie, and Amy Walker; Jane,Johnny, Jimmy, Susan, and Nora Nedwick, David, Ryan, Caroline, and Isaiah Dale; and Davis and Darci Walker. A friend and brother to Ken (Therese) Walker, Steve (Stephanie) Walker, and Patti (Steven) Lenard.

John graduated from Detroit Benedictine High School, and went on to play college football at Holy Cross in Massachusetts. He became a high school teacher and coach for nearly 40 years at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, Birmingham Brother Rice, and Troy Athens High School. His strongest professional passion was building virtue and character in young men through coaching football, and he was the head coach at Troy Athens from 1976-2004. John’s reputation and success earned him induction into the Michigan High School Football Association Coaches Hall of Fame.

During his retirement, John’s competitive outlet was golfing with family and friends, but he prioritized family time, considering the love of God, family, and friends the only thing on his bucket list.

John supported the Pro-life movement, and loved his Catholic Faith. He was particularly committed to training people of all ages in Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body and Aristotle’s Four Temperaments so that they, like he, could excel in their marriages and personal relationships.
