Obituary for Carol Sue Kirken

Our cherished Carol Kirken died in Tanzania on August 5th. She was on her annual holiday with family members for an African safari. Having passed 75 years old, she was resolutely shooting for 100. She would have surely achieved it if not for this accident. Carol died quickly in the arms of her son Robert. We are shocked and saddened at her early departure from our lives.

With extensive experiences in the Rochester area at Crittenton Hospital, Carol is widely known and respected among the medical community. She helped so many friends and patients in time of need. Subsequently she developed a successful entrepreneurial business with Arbonne International as a National Vice President. Her business ranged across the country and hundreds of team members.

Passionate about helping the less fortunate, Carol was a founding member of the Rochester area Women’s Fund with an extensive history of contributions to its goals. Her current charitable interests focused on the North Oakland YMCA where she was a board of director member and an adamant daily user of its facilities. Her central focus was supporting military members and their dependents with financial assistance for North Oakland YMCA programs. This strengthened a mystical bond she saw between two dearly treasured men, navy veterans, who never met…her dearly loved father who was fascinated by submarines and a husband discovered to have been a submarine officer.

Carol’s family received extraordinary nurturing, encouragement and unconditioned love. She never doubted that her children would find, and achieve their desired successes. Her kids turned out wonderfully. Robert is a scientist and university dean; Kris is a director of social service; David works world-wide as a hotel & resort general manager. Her children’s spouses and five grandchildren were always closely nestled in Carol’s circle of love.

Her husband and life partner Bill was happy to work behind the scenes to provide his own support and encouragement for Carol’s interests. He knew that he was “…the luckiest man in the world” to have Carol for his wife and love.

Positive, smiling and so easily engaging of others…her range of friends is enormous…nursing school friends of 50 years, to those just having shared a craft beer or wine at a communal table. Carol fit so wonderfully and deliciously in many lives…especially those of her husband and children.

Without her there will always be a sadness. But the joy she created is so much the stronger for her family and friends.

She is gone. She is here. She will always comfort us…our cherished Carol
